Today, I had an auction removed from auction site eBay.co.uk on the grounds that they “don’t allow items or memorabilia associated with the Nazi Party.” No, it wasn’t one of Hitler’s napkins I was flogging, just an innocent Sex Pistols print from my humble collection of Jamie Reid art.
The offending article
Now, I’ve had a look at the criteria, and the painting, despite having Swastika emblems on the Queen’s eyes, does not “promote violence, hatred, racial or religious intolerance,” nor is it anything really to do with Ze Germans. It’s annoying especially as these similar Jamie Reid prints like this one are happily available for sale on the website.
So in the spirit of Punk, and with two fingers firmly up, if you’d like to buy the quite unique print, (details below), email me direct, and I’ll save the extortionate 10% commission eBay quietly started charging late last year.
About the print
The Swastika Eyeballs image was first submitted to A&M for the cover of the Sex Pistol’s God Save the Queen 7 & subsequently banned. Pointing out the royal family’s previous connections was deemed too risky by the record company and the image was dropped in favour of the now iconic safety-pin but minus the swastikas image- making this quite the unique print.
This particular edition, numbered 263/750 is especially rare because Reid mistakenly signed it upside down. A common mistake during signings, one of the prints came off the wrong way round and Reid signed without looking, making this a truly ONE-OFF piece off art. Reid also added a swastika in pencil to the bottom, again, making this a quite special edition.
