‘Star Tiger, Star Ariel’ is the latest album from Delays, named after two ‘missing without trace’ aeroplanes that believers use to validate theories that the Bermuda triangle is either magical or dangerous. I was born slap bang in the middle of the Bermuda triangle, and mysteriously, Delays have written two of my most played songs of all time. I’m talking quadruple figures on my iPod, play-it-as-my-coffin-slips-behind-that-curtain, thrice daily plays of Nearer Than Heaven. When professionally, I should really be listening to Audio Bullys or Babyshambles. Soundtracks to a time when I was missing without trace.

New Delays album
So, to ‘Star Tiger’, which just arrived in the post. I haven’t been haranguing the PR girl for it this time, but the press release is full of words like, “dazzles” and “melancholic.” The echoey electronica is ever-present, while Greg’s falsetto is now a recognisable part of the fabric of Indie Pop. But what I wanted was another track to fly into triple figure airspace. Or another surprise like when Aaron found his voice and started wearing Stone Island coats. Or when they went all 80s. Something. Something they can play on Soccer AM as the goals crash in. Star Tiger, Star Ariel, give me a few months to search the area fully. The new album is fantastic, Delays, but my radio is no longer on your frequency… I think my radar is on the blink. I blame the ash cloud.
Delays release their fourth album, ‘Star Tiger, Star Ariel’ on 21st June 2010, Lookout Mountain Records. Jeff Maysh has seen Delays live 28 times.
