Loaded Bizzo Cards, Gotta Catch Them All

I helped redesign the Loaded business cards this week, as we haven’t had any since 2007. They’ve got a chequered past, the Loaded business cards: Once known as ’shag-tags,’ some were once stolen by a workie who went on a drinking and blagging rampage, until I caught up with him. Othertimes, Loaded staff would lick them and stick to their foreheads at booze launches. Anyway, we’re all grown up now, and so are the cards. Each member of staff chose an iconic cover from yesteryear. And here they all are:

Loaded LAFTA Awards!

“Loaded has come in for a lot of stick over the years,” said this year’s LAFTA Legend Frank Skinner, “and rightly so!”
It was a quip that summed up the debauchery of the magazine and our annual comedy awards: Take a room full of top British comedians, throw in a Welsh rap collective, pour in endless booze and serve. That was the recipe for this year’s bash…

What’s It Like To Work At Loaded and GQ?

This video was made by Maxim editor Greg Gutfeld, and plonked on the end of a covermounted DVD. It was at a time when the (now defunct) magazine was waging wars on rival men’s magazines. It was an exciting time, when people were sending cakes with ABC figures iced on the top to each other. The first guy is meant to be Dylan Jones I think.

Anyway, the Loaded one was really funny. I think it was meant to upset us, but to be fair it was pretty spot on. We were going through a real tea and cake phase at that time.

Hand-Scrawled Coverlines, A History

The new Esquire prompted the hunt to find out who first scrawled coverlines using a pen rather than a computer. Here’s that potted history right here in a visual ho-down. The Front example may not have been arty, it might have just been cost-cutting. I used to work there.

It’s Well Rotted Muck!

Ladies and gents, allow me to ruin, sorry, improve your lives by introducing you to this new blog by former Loaded Deputy Editor, Andrew “Woodsy” Woods. My features editor for many years at Loaded now looks set to follow in the footsteps of ‘Modern Toss‘ by creating his own cartoon humour. The man is, as I heard Jimmy Carr once accuse him at an award ceremony, “clinically insane.” He’s also the funniest person I know, and I’m loving his new work.

There’s also on display, some of the cartoons he ‘imagined up’ for Loaded. Many of them, like the above ‘toilet duck’, have made me LOL more than any other drawing. The strip below, “Big Ron Accidental Racist,” (Loaded, 2007) is also an excellent example of his work: offensively brilliant. It’s been pinned to my desk for years.

Robber Foiled By Lads Mag…

In what must the most unbelievable news story I’ve ever read, a copy of Loaded was responsible for nailing a small-town crook this week. Read on, from the Weston Mercury….

weston

“A WESTON shop assistant hit an armed robber with a lads mag to stop her from making off with the takings.

Ross Gould was working in his family-owned business, Malvern House News when a knife-wielding woman attacked him on Saturday.

The 60-year-old tussled with the woman before hitting her over the head with a copy of popular magazine Loaded.

Ross was stabbed in his left hand and suffered a few cuts on his right hand before the woman fled out of the Drove Road shop empty-handed.

He said: “The last customer had left about a minute before and I was in the shop on my own.

“This young girl walked in, stood in the middle of the shop, and told me to open the till.

“She had a knife in her hand, which was about eight or nine inches long, and she stabbed the counter and demanded I open the till again.

“I grabbed her arm but I didn’t really have much time to think, it was all a bit of a blur.

“Then I whacked her over the head with Loaded magazine. It was just bigger than Zoo or Nuts - the other magazines which were close to hand.

“I was just trying to get her to let go of the knife.”

The attempted theft happened at about 5.15pm and about 10 minutes later a similar incident happened at Whitecross News and Gifts in Whitecross Road.

A police spokesman said: “On the same day a female offender entered Whitecross News and left with the contents of the till.”

As the Mercury went to press yesterday (Wed), nobody had been arrested for the crimes and anyone with information is urged to call police on 0845 456 7000.”

Loaded Ukraine!

Our Ukranian is a bit rusty at Loaded, but somehow we found the time to translate all our work into Ukrainian and produced a special magazine for our Eastern European cousins. Okay, so they’re rolling out Loaded in other languages now, and this is the Ukraine’s version!

Loaded's new Ukranian edition

Loaded's new Ukranian edition

It certainly looks and feels like Loaded. In fact, most of it is old Loaded stories from yesteryear, given the old Ukrainian spit and polish. It’s quite funny to look at, because they love giving writers the full-bleed photo treatment!

Quite embrassing actually. I’m in it loads.

My Goodness.

Do they have ferrets in Kiev?

Another full bleed? Go on then.

But the funniest thing is Woodsy! This translates as ‘Woodsy’s World!’ Classic.

Oh, and caption this, my Ukrainian friends.

Can anyone translate?

Good work, comrade fellas. Drop yer bacon flavoured wodka.

Loaded- Relaunched.

So we’ve been working pretty hard on the ‘new’ Loaded. Here’s the press release explaining what we’ve been up to. I’ll be uploading some stuff to read that I’ve been involved in very shortly. Exciting times!

The new, relaunched Loaded magazine

The new, relaunched Loaded magazine

BACKED BY an extensive and immersive research and development process, the new look Loaded delivers a raft of new franchises, a new cast list of celebrity columnists and a clean, crisp new look throughout.

New elements include:

* Noise – the new agenda-setting front section, providing young men with all the news and views they need to get the best from their month

* New regular A-list celebrity columnists including Ross Kemp

* A new, world-first reviews section hosted each month by guest celebrity reviewers, such as music reviews with the Stereophonics’s Kelly Jones, plus regular movie critic Richard Bacon and hard-hitting sports columnist Vinnie Jones

*A new expanded Loaded Fashion section, providing young men with the very latest must-have kit month in, month out

* A great, improved and expanded features section with the emphasis on classic Loaded gonzo journalism: this month’s issue sees an intrepid Loaded man travel to Russia on a torture holiday

* A comprehensive redesign throughout, spearheaded by art director Blue Buxton with the assistance of IPC Media editorial director – and recent BSME award-winner – Andy Cowles

Loaded editor Martin Daubney says: “We spent a lot of time talking to our sweet readers, and they said: ‘we love all the great stuff at the heart of the mag: the football, the features, the girls’. So we’ve done a number on them — improving and expanding features and introducing a whole bunch of new stuff. Alongside that, we’ve roped in our celebrity mates - from Richard Bacon on the movies and Vinnie Jones casting an unflinching eye over the sports agenda, to Ross Kemp providing his monthly missive from the front line of modern man. And frankly, we’re mighty pleased with the results.”

The refresh will be supported by a major six figure marketing push across great, relevant partners including MTV and Extreme, with Hi-Tech Media running a campaign in sports bars across the UK. An extensive display campaign will also be run across relevant IPC brands including Nuts and Mousebreaker.

Group advertising director Andrew Goldsmith says: “The all-new Loaded delivers a quality environment for our key consumer clients, delivering A-List Hollywood celebs, kicking off this month with Robert Downey Jr, through to fantastic home grown talent like Jimmy Carr. The re-introduction of the Loaded Style section, complete with a brilliantly shot fashion story, makes Loaded relevant to both high street and high end fashion labels and retailers. Add in our new regular celebrity contributors (like Ross Kemp and Richard Bacon) and you have a fantastic all-round offering for any advertiser looking to target young men with money to spend.”

Loaded publishing director Jo Smalley adds: “Martin and his team have delivered a superb refresh of a truly classic brand, retaining all of its core character and the inimitable spirit of Loaded while bringing it bang up to date. And we’ve taken our cues directly from the people who count – the young men of Britain. The original is still the best.”

On The Cover Of IPC Mag Insider…

And not for the first time. Only kidding. This is the Loaded mob with our designer England football shirts, that raised £1,188 for IPC charity the PSP Association.
